Diamond Clarity Guide

The Soul of a Diamond: A Guide to Clarity

Every diamond holds a secret story, a unique history written in light and shadow long before it meets your eye. This story is told through its clarity, one of the legendary 4 C’s that give a diamond its character and value. Clarity isn't about perfection; it's about the tiny, fascinating "birthmarks"—inclusions inside and blemishes on the surface—that make each gem a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

These characteristics are like celestial freckles, formed under immense pressure deep within the Earth or captured during a diamond's radiant creation in a lab. They are the diamond's unique fingerprint. Our gemologists have poured their expertise into this guide, ensuring every detail is as clever as the diamonds we adore, so you can choose the story that speaks to you.

Decoding the Diamond Clarity Scale

The renowned Gemological Institute of America (GIA) created the definitive roadmap for understanding a diamond's inner world. This scale, with its 11 distinct grades, is the language gemologists use to describe what they see under 10x magnification. Think of it not as a list of flaws, but as a spectrum of personality.

The Pinnacle of Purity: Flawless (FL) & Internally Flawless (IF)
  • Flawless (FL): The rarest of the rare. A Flawless diamond is the stuff of legends—utterly pristine, with no inclusions or blemishes visible even under a powerful microscope. Less than 1% of all diamonds can claim this breathtaking distinction.
  • Internally Flawless (IF): A whisper away from perfection. An Internally Flawless diamond has a pure, untouched heart, with no inclusions inside. Any blemishes are minor and only on the surface, like a tiny speck of dust on a masterpiece.

Both FL and IF diamonds are completely eye-clean, appearing absolutely perfect to the naked eye.

The Nearly Perfect Pair: VVS1 & VVS2 (Very, Very Slightly Included)

These gems are dazzlingly clean, with inclusions so minuscule they're like tiny secrets only a skilled gemologist can find. To the untrained eye, VVS diamonds are indistinguishable from their flawless cousins, offering a pristine canvas of shimmering light. They are always eye-clean.

The Sweet Spot: VS1 & VS2 (Very Slightly Included)

Welcome to the sweet spot of beauty and value. VS diamonds contain minor inclusions that are difficult to spot even under magnification. These are the smart, stunning choice for those who want a diamond that appears perfect to the naked eye without the premium price tag of a higher grade. VS diamonds are generally eye-clean and always a classic choice.

The Savvy Selection: SI1 & SI2 (Slightly Included)

These diamonds are a testament to individuality. While their inclusions are noticeable to a gemologist under 10x magnification, they are often completely invisible to the naked eye. An SI diamond can be a treasure, offering incredible sparkle and character at an accessible price point. Many are eye-clean, making them one of the most popular and intelligent choices on the market.

We believe every diamond’s beauty should shine through, which is why we choose not to carry Included-grade (I1, I2, I3) diamonds, as their characteristics are typically visible to the eye and can affect the gem's brilliance and fire.

A Diamond's Unique Character

A diamond's inner world is a fascinating landscape. Whether it's a natural gem shaped over billions of years or a lab-grown marvel born of innovation, each develops a signature look.

Inclusions are the internal storytellers. In natural diamonds, these might be microscopic crystals or delicate, feather-like lines trapped during formation—tiny time capsules from the Earth's core. In lab diamonds, similar features tell the story of their accelerated growth.

Blemishes are surface-level imperfections, often introduced during the diamond's journey through cutting, polishing, and setting. Think of them as the gentle marks of a life well-lived. From tiny pinpoints like specks of stardust to graceful, whitish graining, these characteristics are what a gemologist plots on a diagram to map out the diamond's soul.

Your Guide to Choosing with Confidence

Navigating the world of clarity is a dazzling adventure. Here are a few secrets to help you find a gem that truly captures your heart.

Chase the Sparkle, Not the Grade

The most important factor is whether a diamond is eye-clean—meaning it looks flawless to you, without magnification. A stunning VS2 or even a cleverly chosen SI1 diamond can offer the same breathtaking visual appeal as a Flawless stone, but at a far more delightful price.

The Shape of a Diamond's Soul

A diamond's cut can be your best friend. Brilliant cuts, like the Round, Oval, and Cushion, are master illusionists, their many facets hiding inclusions like a well-kept secret. In contrast, elegant step-cuts like the Emerald and Asscher are like crystal-clear windows into the diamond's heart, so you may want to aim for a higher clarity grade like VS1 or above.

Become a Diamond Detective

Don't be afraid to get up close and personal! When possible, view diamonds in person to see how their characteristics play with the light. Remember that a clever setting can often hide an inclusion near the edge of a stone, turning a unique fingerprint into your little secret.

The Secret Power of Clarity

Clarity is one of a diamond’s hidden storytellers—it shapes not only how your gem looks, but also how it shines, lasts, and is valued. While technical grades matter, what truly counts is how the diamond appears to your eyes and how it makes you feel.

The Look of Brilliance

Inclusions (tiny natural marks inside a diamond) can sometimes soften a stone’s sparkle. But many are so small that they’re invisible without magnification, leaving your diamond just as dazzling to the naked eye.

Strength and Security

When inclusions are large or numerous, they may affect a diamond’s durability. That’s why jewelers recommend choosing a grade that balances beauty with long-term strength.

The Dance of Light

Because diamonds are all about fire and brilliance, clarity can influence how light moves through the stone. Most inclusions won’t interfere, but heavier ones might dim the sparkle.

And here’s the delightful truth: while Flawless and Internally Flawless diamonds are treasured for their rarity, many eye-clean VS or SI stones look just as radiant—and often at a friendlier price point. The real magic lies in finding that perfect harmony between clarity, beauty, and value.
